Roots Go Deep in Otter Lake

Leslie Park as we know it today—a magnificent destination for families and nature lovers—was officially established in 1972. The park takes its name from Leslie Township, founded in 1866, which was named in honour of the Honourable James Leslie, a prominent Canadian Senator.

Its story is deeply entwined with the broader history of the Municipality of Otter Lake, officially incorporated in 1876 through the union of three townships: Leslie, Clapham, and Huddersfield. Before becoming a peaceful haven, this region was a bustling hub of activity. First inhabited by First Nations peoples, the area was later settled by a diverse wave of immigrants from Germany, England, Scotland, France, and Poland.

When the forestry industry eventually declined, the residents of Otter Lake adapted by embracing the region’s greatest asset: its breathtaking natural beauty. The crystal-clear lakes, sandy beaches, and peaceful forests that once supported a robust industry became a draw for visitors seeking leisure and escape.

Leslie Park is the direct result of this transition, preserving the region’s natural splendour and continuing the long tradition of welcoming people to the shores of Otter Lake.
